Small-flat living

What to do with things you rarely use in a small Mumbai flat

Almost every Mumbai flat has the same problem: not enough cupboard for the things we only use a few times a year. Suitcases, sports gear, a camera, a guitar, camping kit and a drill all compete with clothes and daily life for the same few square feet.

This guide gives you a simple way to decide what stays, what goes and what to store.

Start with the twice-a-year rule

Go through your cupboards and set aside anything you have used fewer than two or three times in the past year. That is your storage pile. Group it into travel (suitcases, bags), hobby gear (camera, guitar, sports), seasonal items (camping, monsoon gear) and tools.

Sell, donate or keep

  • Sell what you have outgrown or replaced. A working camera or console you have not touched in a year is usually worth more now than it will be after another two.
  • Donate or gift what you will not use again.
  • Keep what you will genuinely use again, or what matters to you.

Four ways to store what is left

  • At home: bed-boxes, loft space and wardrobe-top boxes. They cost nothing, but they fill up fast, and damp can be a problem in the monsoon.
  • Vacuum bags for soft items like bedding and winter clothes. Do not use them for leather or anything you cannot compress.
  • A storage unit: makes sense if you are clearing a whole flat or have a lot of furniture. You usually carry things yourself and pay for the space.
  • Per-item storage with pickup: makes sense when you have a handful of items. You pay for what you store, and nothing needs to be carried.

What it costs with RentMint

RentMint is per-item storage with pickup. Small is ₹99 (shoebox-size things such as a camera, drone or game console), Medium is ₹199 (up to cabin-bag size, such as a tennis racket, skateboard, speaker or duffel bag) and Large is ₹349 (bigger than a cabin bag, such as a guitar, large suitcase, bicycle or camping gear). All prices are per item per month, month to month.

For example, a camera kit (₹99), a tennis racket (₹199) and a guitar (₹349) come to ₹647 a month. Pickup and return charges, if any, are confirmed on WhatsApp before we collect. See all plans and prices.

Before you hand anything over

  • Photograph each item and note serial numbers.
  • Clean it and let it dry fully. Never store anything damp.
  • Take the batteries out of electronics.
  • Do not store anything illegal, flammable, perishable or living. No provider can take these.
  • Ask about insurance. RentMint does not offer it yet, so we ask you not to store anything irreplaceable.
